President Biden signs decree stipulating that 50% of cars sold in 2030 will be electric

US President Joe Biden has taken a step towards meeting his greenhouse gas reduction target with a decree providing for half of all new vehicles sold in 2030 to be electric, a decision backed by major manufacturers American and foreign cars.

The US administration has proposed new standards on vehicle emissions that will reduce pollution by 2026, starting with the 2023 models.

The 50% target, which is not legally required, has won the support of US and foreign carmakers, who say billions of dollars are needed to meet it.

General Motors, Ford and Stellantis NV said in a statement that by 2030 it aspires to “reach sales of 40-50% of annual electric vehicle volumes in the United States.” The three Detroit carmakers argue that aggressive targets for electric vehicle sales can only be met with billions of dollars in government subsidies, charging station networks, investment in research and development, subsidies to expand production capacity for electric vehicles, and supply chains in the US.

Car manufacturers Toyota, Hyundai and Nissan have also announced that they support US targets.

Separately, BMW, Ford, Honda, Volkswagen and Volvo urged US authorities to take steps to boost consumer demand for electric vehicles
